right in the heart of downtown, inside thehilton atlanta sits a retro escape from the norm. this place is like nowhere else. itwill transport you to a whole different world--polynesian flavors, cold tropical drinks. it combinesa tiki lounge tradition with a new, hip crowd. let's go hang out--it's trader vic's. trader vic’s is a restaurant located inthe bottom of the hilton downtown atlanta. it serves polynesian cuisine that integratesthai, chinese and adds flare to american cuisine. trader vic’s has been here for almost 40years and we will be celebrating our anniversary here in downtown atlanta. i’ve got to say, when you step off the elevatorhere and you open up the doors to trader vic’s,
you’re absolutely amazed. you forget whereyou are. you see wood-fired ovens and tiki stuff, it’s an amazing experience—very, very different. it’s changed dramatically over the years and we’ve seen an insurgenceof great restaurants in the downtown area. you know, we’ve stayed true to our rootshere and we’re very, very proud of what we do and a lot of the things haven’t changed.you know, we have a lot more people living downtown, so this restaurant has become verypopular. shay brought the party here tonight! you guyshave such a great group. tell me, why did you decide to come to trader vic’s? we’re actually here for a birthday party.
ok. my mother’s 52nd birthday. so, you’re having some good drinks and whatare you having for dinner tonight? well, i’m actually going to try the volcanoshrimp, and this mai tai—i may get another. haha and how about this atmosphere? it’s fun! being in basement of the hilton atlanta, it’sthis whole new world right? yeah, this is one of atlanta’s best keptsecrets. it’s really got a neat kind of
atmosphere, the drinks are fantastic, thefood is excellent. i couldn’t recommend it more. what really makes trader vic’s unique reallyis the pan-asian stuff we do from the wok and then our tandor style ovens, wood burningovens really make for some very, very unique foods—something no other restaurant in thecity has. basically what it does, on steaks as an example, it sears it and it gets a greatcrust on the outside, but it stays really, really juicy on the inside, nice and moist, and you get a little kiss of smoke. i’m very, very proud of chef cheing and the jobthat he does down here in this restaurant. he’s been here forever and he’s just agentleman of a guy and an extremely talented
chef—very, very passionate about what hedoes. chef cheing is amazing on the wok and oneof the things he loves making is the wok stir-fried seafood, which has lobster in it, scallopsand shrimp, and it’s just a wonderful dish—people love it. people are looking for the consistency ofour food, the consistency of our drinks. this is the home of the mai tai. you know, maitai was invented by trader vic’s. hanging out with my favorite tiki expert here.so, paul you come in from outside, downtown atlanta, you walk into trader vic’s andyou’re really transported to a different place, a different time. tell us about thehistory and the tradition of the mai tai.
trader vic in 1944 was hanging out at thebar and he mixed this up using orgeat syrup, simple syrup, lime juice, some rum and wentto the lady who sipped it and went “mai tai roi!â€, which is in tahitian, “thebestâ€. mai tai roi! did i get it right? awesome, cheers! that is great. so, rick, you’re a regular here at tradervic’s. you’ve got a nice drink in front of you. what are you having tonight? i’m having a menehune juice. tell me, why are you a regular at trader vic’s?what keeps you coming back?
escape is a mum. it’s one of the few placesin atlanta where you can get away. people, after they’ve had work, they justcome here to have a mai tai. people just come also for our nice dessert. our flambe, bananasfoster that we serve and cook at the table. so, we just saw this incredible table-sidedessert service. ice cream and bananas and fruit and caramel,it’s delicious. we’re two regulars. we bring our kids, webring our friends, we bring everybody to trader vic’s because this place is a classic tikirestaurant. it’s something old school mixed with something new school. what i like about this restaurant, mostly, trader vic’s. even though we’re polynesian,
we’re always looking to please our guests.they just come here to have a mai tai, have a dinner here and have a great time. it’s a cool place to be, with cool people, drinking cool drinks, eating cool food.
